SPEAKERS

Edee Beau is an award-winning hair and makeup artist and founder of London-based studio Edee Beau. She says that she prefers to wear her hair in a weave, and argues that her natural hair has always been thin and tough and requires some kind of artifice to achieve a maintainable hairstyle. For her, it’s all about personal style and what you are comfortable with

Diane Abott is the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington. In 1987 she became the first black woman ever elected to the British Parliament. She has since built a distinguished career as a parliamentarian, broadcaster and commentator

Emma Dabiri is a writer and commentator. She is a PhD Researcher in the Sociology Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. Three years ago, she quit the whole ‘relaxing jive’, and stopped straightening her hair. ‘For many black women, simply wearing our hair in its own natural state can become a complex and politicised act,’ she says
